Welcome to Stanwood,
Camano Island, and Skagit Valley Washington.
Located less than one hour north of Seattle in Snohomish County, Stanwood is far
enough to be outside the metropolis, yet easily accessible to all the large city
has to offer. However, if you’re more country oriented and like the out doors,
Stanwood has everything you need including the rural ambiance you desire.
Stanwood was settled during the years of 1870 and 1890. Initially called
Centerville, it was the first Norwegian settlement in what is now Washington
State. The principal industries during those 20 years were agriculture and
logging with agriculture continuing to be a major industry today.
Economy of the Area
Seed, produce and meat production are all primary industries in north Snohomish
County. Major agricultural players include Alf Christianson Seed Company and
Twin City Foods. Christianson Seed Company ranks among the largest independent
seed growers in the nation. Twin City Foods, the city's largest employer, is a
major national wholesaler of frozen vegetables. Many small, local growers
represented by Farmer Markets during the summer add to the attractiveness and
economy of Stanwood.
In addition to the agricultural economy, the Stanwood School District, Josephine
Retirement Center, Schenk Packing, QFC Food Center, Twin City Foods and Haggen
Food and Pharmacy contribute greatly to the overall employment of the area.
The Stanwood Community and Area Activities
Stanwood takes great pride in its community’s active involvement in the school
district, senior services, religious centers and municipal services. If you
enjoy getting involved and keeping busy, there are plenty of opportunities to
volunteer your talents.
For active outdoor enjoyment, Stanwood hosts a variety of parks and
recreational activities. With over 43 acres, Heritage Park includes several ball
fields, a Skateboard Park and playing field. If it’s the water that interests
you, there is Camano Island State Park, Kayak Point, and Wenberg State Park for
recreational opportunities and camping.
Pro Golfers will love playing on the beautiful and challenging Camaloch
Golf Course on Camano Island to the west, and Kayak Point Golf Courses a few
miles south of the city.
Two rivers, the Skagit and the Stilliguamish, provide a variety of action for
avid fisher-men or ladies, with Chinook, Pink and Coho salmon, Steelhead, Dolly
Varden, Whitefish and Cutthroat. A number of freshwater lakes and Puget Sound
also offer great fishing.
Hunters - If someone in your family likes to hunt, they can head straight
for the Skagit Wildlife Area. There they can hunt waterfowl, pheasant and
black-tailed deer on 11,000 acres. And for the adventurous who like to test
their wings, there is Paragliding and the Evergreen Soaring Club.
